IBS Coatings for Ultrafast Laser Applications

Dielectric coatings constitute one of the most fundamental optical technologies since the majority of all optical components are top coated. Dielectric coatings allow precise tailoring of the spectral behavior of optical components: reflection, transmission, and phase effects like dispersion can be designed almost arbitrarily. The large progress in the field of ultrafast lasers in the last years has opened new application areas, which increase the demand on dielectric coatings with high precision, low optical losses and high damage threshold. Ion Beam Sputtering (IBS) suits perfectly for this task because it allows producing dense layers with a high process stability, accuracy and damage threshold, low scattering and absorption of light and no need for high substrate temperatures. In this talk the amenities of this technology for manufacturing optics are shown at the example of dispersive mirrors for ultrafast lasers. Besides the layer design, characterization of the coating material and process control, the characterization of the optical components and their application in ultrafast lasers is presented.
